Mediate this, Kofi

Mediate this, Kofi

AP report filed (via Jerusalem Post) at 19:02 today, September 4, 2006 (Israel time):
A UN spokesman says Secretary-General Kofi Annan has agreed to requests by Hizbullah and Israel that he mediate in negotiations over the release of two abducted IDF soldiers.Oops. It took all of one hour and 37 minutes for a retraction, this via
Y-Net:
Diplomatic officials in Jerusalem denied reports that Israel agreed to have UN Secretary General Kofi Annan mediate negotiations for the release of two soldiers kidnapped by Hizbullah. "We did not agree that the UN and Kofi Annan would be the mediators," sources said. This last is in the "no s***, Sherlock" category. No nation would willingly agree to have an enemy such as Kofi Annan be a mediator. For starters, a mediator would need to be an honest broker, without prejudice against either side.Annan's quick denunciations of any action Israel takes to defend itself, and his corruption (filed under "Oil for Food" during the dozen years of sanctions against Saddam Hussein), and his general stance of being unable to call terrorists by their proper name when Israel is the target.Yes, Israel would want Annan to mediate...when hell freezes over.
