"a different notion of submission"

"a different notion of submission"

There is a brief exchange at NRO's Corner started by Ramesh Ponnuru on the point that Islam, the word, does not mean "peace." Rather, it means "submission." Its surface meaning is "submission to the will of God;" it's practical meaning is submission to the will of whichever mokes are in power. The telling and, frankly irrelevent point Ponnuru makes is "the notion that obedience to God's will is true peace hardly unique to Islam." True, again on first and superficial reading. But the underlying truth is that Islam is about converting the infidels by whatever means necessary, including at the point of the sword.Ask yourself this: otherwise, how does one explain the rapid spread of Islam, from a tribal religion of Arabian primitives, to a goodly part of Europe and Eurasia? It wasn't because everyone spontaneously decided that they needed to learn Arabic to worship God. It was, plain and simple, the armed capture of territory.Andrew McCarthy properly questions Ponnuru's premise. Judaism and Christianity have reformed, in the sense that, at least in the West, one is not forced to believe, or to "submit" to any particular interpretation of what God wishes for us. Islam remains, at least in places where it is the only faith allowed to flourish, a religion of coercion. Of submission to the ruling Muslim authorities. Where are those places where only Islam is allowed to flourish? Basically every place where Muslims are in charge of the government. The key word is "flourish." One will find Christians, Hindus, Buddhists, and even a few Jews, in Islamic countries. But they exist largely as dhimmi, second class (if that) citizens. In some places like Saudi Arabia, it is plain against the law to practice any faith other than (certain kinds of) Islam. Then there's that automatic death sentence to anyone who renounces his or her Islamic faith. McCarthy summarizes the situation nicely:
that what is conveyed here is a different notion of submission than one finds in the Judeo-Christian tradition. And while it is not the only interpretation of Islam, it is one accepted by tens of millions of Muslims, and one rationally based on their scriptures and traditions. What I see in the West are Muslims who make nice in public, and issue soothing sounds: "Islam is a religion of peace," "Islam treats all equally" and other lies. Lies big, and lies small. Islam is itself a lie. It is after world domination, a restoration of some world-wide caliphate that may never have existed in the past, but which is the long-range goal. Those who await some Islamic "Reformation," a liberalizing event in the faith's history, had best not wait too long. There is in fact some thought that Islam has already had its Reformation, and its name is
Wahhabism. The analogy with Christianity? The Protestant Reformation, it is alleged, merely returned the Christian faith to its true roots: a simple statement of faith in Jesus Christ as the savior who died for all of our sins. If this is true, and the harsh and pure interpretation that is Wahabbism is the "reformed" version of Islam, then we do have a clash of civilizations on our hands. And we'd best get to it.

What part of "unconditional" don't they understand?

What part of "unconditional" don't they understand?

In language that could not be plainer, UN resolution 1559 calls for "the disbanding and disarmament of all Lebanese and non-Lebanese militias." Which means you, Hizbullah. Of course, like much else about the United Nations (unofficial motto: "We're only one war away from being Zionist free!"), resolutions are plentiful, and real steps towards a lasting peace scarce on the ground. 1559 dates from almost exactly two years ago, September 2, 2004. And has been ignored by Lebanon and its puppet masters Iran and Syria. For good (bad, actually) measure, Lebanon has never recognized the State of Israel on its southern border, even six years after Israel unilaterally disengaged one hundred per cent from all Lebanese territory. Lebanon, whose government and people stood by and, choose your terms, allowed, encouraged, or just could not do a thing while Hizbullah used its territory to commit war crimes against Israeli civilians. Yes, war crimes -- what else to call crude missiles fired at civilians with virtually no guidance systems and packed with shrapnel whose sole purpose is to maximize casualties? Now, one of these Lebanese stooges has the temerity to demand that Lebanon won't participate in peace talks because "Israel must first fulfill UNSC resolution 1701 and end its embargo on Lebanon before we can talk about peace" (Jerusalem Post).Well, let's talk about 1701, the full text of which may be found here. The two things that leap out are these:
"...unconditional release of the abducted Israeli soldiers.""Full implementation of the relevant provisions of the Taif Accords, and of resolutions 1559 (2004) and 1680 (2006), that require the disarmament of all armed groups in Lebanon."In other words, Lebanon, it's on you, with your "15,000 troops" to first do what was supposed to have been done before Hizbullah started the fight.Oh, and here's a little note for the Foreign Minister of Lebanon, who is the official quoted earlier: "unconditional" means without conditions. In simpler words, right now, nothing is required of Israel. Nothing. You don't need to discuss this with anyone. Except, of course, your Hizbullah, Syrian, and Iranian masters. But then, Lebanon would have to act like a real nation, and actually stand up on its hind legs. Instead of being Hizbullah's bitch.

Mediate this, Kofi

Mediate this, Kofi

AP report filed (via Jerusalem Post) at 19:02 today, September 4, 2006 (Israel time):
A UN spokesman says Secretary-General Kofi Annan has agreed to requests by Hizbullah and Israel that he mediate in negotiations over the release of two abducted IDF soldiers.Oops. It took all of one hour and 37 minutes for a retraction, this via
Y-Net:
Diplomatic officials in Jerusalem denied reports that Israel agreed to have UN Secretary General Kofi Annan mediate negotiations for the release of two soldiers kidnapped by Hizbullah. "We did not agree that the UN and Kofi Annan would be the mediators," sources said. This last is in the "no s***, Sherlock" category. No nation would willingly agree to have an enemy such as Kofi Annan be a mediator. For starters, a mediator would need to be an honest broker, without prejudice against either side.Annan's quick denunciations of any action Israel takes to defend itself, and his corruption (filed under "Oil for Food" during the dozen years of sanctions against Saddam Hussein), and his general stance of being unable to call terrorists by their proper name when Israel is the target.Yes, Israel would want Annan to mediate...when hell freezes over.

Death to Christian Zionists!

Death to Christian Zionists!

Well, they didn't quite say that. But here is a collection of "Christian" tribalists who believe that actual Christians who support Israel are simply a bunch of knuckle-dragging bigots who are racist pigs. They've published their wonderful thoughts on what it means to be a "Christian."The screed is published under the aegis of the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem, and it's got the usual tribal emphasis: "Palestinians are one people, both Muslim and Christian." No Jews, of course. Any Jewish "settlements" in "Palestine" would be "illegal."These mokes go on to blame "Christian Zionist leaders and organizations" for everything that they perceive is wrong in the Middle East. What they presumably mean by "Christian Zionist organizations" are evangelical Christian churches such as the Baptists, who actually claim to believe what is written in their Bibles.Clearly, the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem, joined by tribal church leaders from the region (e.g. Syrian Orthodox), is not a Bible-believing church. Or, like their Episcopal brethren in America, simply ignore those parts where God has reserved a few hectares of land for the Jews. Which is to say the entirety of the Hebrew scriptures. But, hey, they're just racist Jews, after all...The screed trots out all the usual blather about those poor, oppressed Paleos, and how it is "the governments of Israel and the United States that are presently imposing their unilateral pre-emptive borders and domination over Palestine." Not stated, of course, is that the Paleos have never missed an opportunity to miss an opportunity. The rejection of the 2000 deal brokered by President Clinton comes to mind. But, hey, that was only 97% of the land. Also totally absent from this nonsense is any notion that the Palestinians are responsible for any acts of terror. To read what these mokes have put forth is to fail to acknowledge history, both ancient, and recent. Ancient, in that the Jews have always lived in the Holy Land. Recent, in that Arabs have been attacking Jews, and Israel, with both national armies and with terror tactics. These churchmen are not Christian, as I understand what that means. They are Arabs who are tribal, using their alleged faith to heap scorn on Jews and those Christians who have gotten past "Christ-killer!" epithets and who recognize that the Jews remain God's chosen people, even if they don't share the Christian belief that Jesus is the messiah.Such unreasoned one-sided argumentation and will ignoring of the facts has another name when it comes to the Jews: anti-Semitism. These churchmen fill the bill.
